A Few Fall Program Highlights
We always like to take a look back at the previous season’s programs and give you a keyhole view of what went on. September: Four Day Canoe trip on Lake Uttica with 8th grade students formerly from the Yuba River Charter School. October: Fall Adventure Course at Synergia. Highlights this year were overnight «Salmon Camp», canoeing and rafting on the main stem of the Yuba River from Parks Bar to Hallwood. Alameda-Oakland Home Learners. Students from this Bay Area home school collective returned to Synergia for the third time to participate in a 5-day program. Starting with one day on the ropes course with 12 older members and 6 younger members and siblings, we then headed out with the older group to canoe the 34 mile Iron Canyon section of the mighty Sacramento River for four days. (Interestingly, this stretch of the river is a candidate for Wild and Scenic designation.) Accompanying us were hundreds of salmon making their way upstream to their ancestral spawning grounds. At times jumping fully out of the water, they left immense hollow-sounding splashes that made us wonder if we were boating with whales, rather than fish. November: Grizzly Hill School on the ropes course. Just a mile from Synergia is a small public school, Grizzly Hill. The 3rd through 8th grade students spent two days on the ropes course as part of a community exchange program. Each class designed and implemented a community service project in the neighborhood. In appreciation of their hard work and giving, and to help the students to develop teamwork and communication skills, Synergia hosted the ropes course program pro bono. We were impressed with the students, and with the dedication and high caliber of the teachers, and we were very happy to have the chance to work closely with our own community kids.
